Wiedingharde

Wilderness National Park is a coastal protected area on South Africa’s Garden Route in the Western Cape that conserves a mix of estuaries, dune systems, wetlands, indigenous forest and fynbos. The park sits adjacent to the town of Wilderness and is part of the broader Garden Route conservation landscape.

The area is valued for river and estuary systems, sheltered beaches and walking trails; common activities include canoeing, birdwatching and short wilderness hikes. Lagoons and reedbeds form important bird habitat and attract recreational visitors for paddling and wildlife viewing.

The park was established to protect these coastal and inland habitats and is now managed within the wider Garden Route National Park framework. Over time management has focused on conserving wetland systems and native vegetation while providing low-impact visitor access.

The park lies on South Africa’s southern coast near the town of Wilderness, with the regional centre of George a short drive inland. Coastal roads and small access points from Wilderness provide the main visitor approaches.
