Wetterstein
Mountains Alpine massif straddling Germany–Austria including Zugspitze
An Alpine range on the Austria-Germany border, Wetterstein includes Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze; visitors take cable cars, climb via ferratas and hike the limestone ridges.
Wetterstein is a mountain massif in the Northern Limestone Alps, straddling the Austria-Germany border, and contains some of the highest and most rugged peaks in the region. The range is best known for the Zugspitze, which at 2,962 metres is the highest point in Germany.
The massif offers alpine climbing, hiking, ski touring and classic via ferrata routes, with a number of developed access points and mountain huts. The dramatic limestone peaks and steep faces make it a prominent feature seen from both German and Austrian valleys.
The Wetterstein range lies on the border of Bavaria and Tyrol, with the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the German side and Ehrwald and Mittenwald nearby; it is a major alpine destination for both summer and winter mountain recreation.
- Border and geology: The range straddles the border between Bavaria (Germany) and Tyrol (Austria) and forms part of the Northern Limestone Alps.
- Glacier and access: Glacier remnants such as the Schneeferner exist on the highest slopes and cable cars plus a rack railway provide year-round tourist access to Zugspitze summit facilities.
