Main image

The Wet Tropics of Queensland is a tropical rainforest region in northeastern Australia recognised for its biodiversity and ancient lineage of plant groups. The area contains many rainforest types, from lowland to montane forest.

Visitors encounter dense rainforest, waterfalls, and a high diversity of plants and animals, including primitive flowering plant lineages and rainforest specialist species. Scenic drives, walking tracks and guided nature tours are common ways to experience the area.

The Wet Tropics have supported rainforest ecosystems for millions of years and were progressively protected through the establishment of national parks and reserves to conserve their unique biodiversity and evolutionary history.

The Wet Tropics extend along the northeastern Queensland coast in Australia, encompassing protected rainforest areas in upland and coastal terrain close to regional centres such as Cairns.

  • Access and seasonality: Many of the rainforest sections are best visited from the Cairns region; wet season access can be difficult in some areas due to heavy rainfall.
