The Westerwald is a low mountain range in western Germany spanning parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a forested, rural upland area known for basalt outcrops, rolling hills and traditional crafts.

The region is noted for its rural towns, pottery tradition (Westerwald pottery) and hiking opportunities across wooded ridges and small valleys. The landscape mixes conifer and beech woodland with pastures and small lakes.

Historically the Westerwald has been a centre for crafts and small-scale industry, with local traditions in ceramics and quarrying shaping settlement patterns. Today it is valued for outdoor recreation and cultural heritage.

Geographically the range lies east of the Rhine valley and extends roughly between the cities of Koblenz, Siegen and Limburg in western Germany.

  • Highest point: The highest summit is the Fuchskaute at about 657 metres, offering the range's top elevation and viewpoints in the central Westerwald.

How to Get to Westerwald #

The Westerwald range is accessible by car from several nearby cities: from Cologne or Frankfurt expect roughly 60-100 km drives, and from Koblenz considerably closer (often under an hour depending on the exact destination). Major autobahns serving the area include the A3 and A48; from those motorways you turn onto regional roads into the various towns and hiking trailheads.

There are also regional trains and buses to towns on the edges of the Westerwald (for example to Montabaur, Limburg and Altenkirchen) from which local buses or short drives reach trailheads-walking distances from stations vary by chosen trailhead.

Tips for Visiting Westerwald #

  • Plan to access the Westerwald via regional rail or the Autobahn junctions and then switch to local buses or car for village access; towns like Hachenburg and Bad Marienberg make practical bases for exploring the range.
  • Include a stretch of the Westerwaldsteig or shorter marked trails in your itinerary rather than trying to view the region only from roads-the long-distance trail links scenic ridge paths and forested valleys that many road visitors miss.
  • Make time to visit the Kannenbäckerland area (the traditional Westerwald pottery region) or local ceramics museums and workshops-Westerwald stoneware is a regional speciality often overlooked by hikers passing through.
