Area Historic North Holland region with agricultural polders and towns

West Friesland (West-Friesland) is a historical and cultural region in the northern part of North Holland in the Netherlands, distinct from the modern province of Friesland. The area includes a number of small historic port towns and agricultural polders reclaimed from the sea.
Key local features are low-lying reclaimed land, a coastline on the IJsselmeer, and towns that retain architecture and maritime heritage from the Dutch Golden Age. The region is known for cycling routes that connect towns, dykes and open polder landscapes.
Historically the area developed as a maritime and trading region with defensive dykes and engineered polder systems; many towns grew wealthy on shipping and trade. Over time it has shifted to a mix of agriculture, tourism and commuter towns serving larger Dutch cities.
Geographically West-Friesland sits in North Holland north of the city of Amsterdam and the province’s inland waterways, with the IJsselmeer forming much of its northern boundary. Principal towns include historical ports such as Hoorn and Enkhuizen.
- Landscape and activities: The landscape is characterised by reclaimed polders and coastline on the former Zuiderzee / IJsselmeer, so cycling and historic port towns are the main visitor attractions.
What to See #
- Hoorn: Hoorn - a historic harbour town that served as an important port during the Dutch Golden Age and today contains maritime museums and preserved historic streets.
- Enkhuizen: Enkhuizen - another former VOC port with a well-preserved old town and access to the IJsselmeer coastline and maritime museums.
- Medemblik and polders: Medemblik and surrounding polders - small towns and reclaimed lowland areas that illustrate the region's history of land drainage and sea defences.
How to Get to West Friesland (region) #
West Friesland is easiest reached from Amsterdam or Alkmaar. From Amsterdam Centraal, take the Intercity or Sprinter to Hoorn (about 35-45 minutes). Enkhuizen is a direct train from Amsterdam via Hoorn (roughly 1 hour). Alkmaar and Hoorn are also connected by regional buses; local ferries link some harbour towns in summer. Once in town, rent a bike - most of the attractions are within 10-25 km of each other and are connected by dedicated cycle paths.
Tips for Visiting West Friesland (region) #
- Take the train to Hoorn (35-45 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal) and rent a bicycle at the station - most of West Friesland is best explored on two wheels.
- Visit the Westfries Museum in Hoorn to understand the 17th‑century VOC money and maritime rivalries that shaped the towns; many local stories begin there.
- Follow the Markermeer dyke between Enkhuizen and Medemblik around sunset - the light and the salt‑stained dikes change the scale of the landscape.
- Avoid Dutch public holidays for market days if the goal is pace and quiet; the region swells with family traffic on King's Day and Liberation Day.
