The Wessel Islands are an isolated chain of islands off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia, extending northeast from Cape Arnhem into the Arafura Sea. They are significant for their Aboriginal cultural connections and coastal biodiversity.

The islands have been occupied and used by Aboriginal Yolngu people for millennia and retain strong cultural significance. European navigators sighted and charted parts of the chain from the 17th century onwards, but permanent European settlement did not develop.

The Wessel Islands sit off northeastern Arnhem Land in the Gulf and Arafura Sea sector of the Northern Territory, northeast of the Gove Peninsula and the community of Nhulunbuy on the mainland.

The Wessel Islands are in far northern Arnhem Land. There is no regular public transport - access is by private vessel or charter flights from the Northern Territory communities such as Nhulunbuy or Darwin. Visitors should arrange permissions and guidance with Northern Land Council authorities and local Yolŋu communities before travel.

Tips for Visiting Wessel Islands #

Charter or fly-in access is the only practical way to visit - plan logistics well in advance and respect local permit requirements.
Look for traces of Macassan trepangers and Aboriginal shell middens along the beaches; these sites are culturally sensitive - photograph but don't disturb.
Bring mosquito protection and sun shelter; nights can be humid and there are few facilities.
