Wesergebirge
Mountains Low mountain range in Lower Saxony with forests
The Weser Hills (Wesergebirge) run along Lower Saxony’s Weser Valley; tourists hike forested trails, follow river‑side cycling routes and visit nearby half‑timbered towns and small castles.
The Wesergebirge, commonly referred to as the Weser Uplands, is a low mountain and hill region along the middle reaches of the Weser River in central Germany, largely within Lower Saxony. It is notable as a compact zone of forested hills and river valleys that link several historic towns.
The landscape developed over geological time as a band of uplands alongside the river; human settlement and fortified towns grew up on the river for trade and defence from the Middle Ages onward. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the region became popular for leisure tourism and nature recreation.
The region sits along the middle Weser between the confluence at Hann. Münden and the approaches to Bremen, mainly within Lower Saxony but extending into neighbouring states. It lies in central northern Germany and is reached from regional cities such as Hanover and Bremen.
- Weser Cycle Route: A continuous long-distance cycling route follows the Weser River for about 520 km from Hann. Münden to the North Sea, passing the Weser Uplands along much of its route.
- Hill heights: Many hilltops in the region reach heights close to 500 metres, offering panoramic views over the river valleys and forested slopes.
How to Get to Wesergebirge #
The Wesergebirge lies along the middle Weser valley between towns such as Hameln, Rinteln and Bodenwerder. Hameln is served by regional trains from Hannover (S-Bahn and regional services); from Hameln local roads and well-marked walking trails lead into the hills. Driving from Hannover takes around 40-60 minutes via the A2 and B1/B83 depending on the chosen trailhead.
Tips for Visiting Wesergebirge #
- Visit the Weserbergland towns (Hameln, Rinteln) early in the morning when the river fog hangs low - it amplifies the fairy-tale quality of the landscape.
- Bring binoculars for the ridge woodlands: goshawks and woodpeckers are regulars but easy to miss.
- If exploring by car, use the B83 and B83a roads to hop between viewpoints rather than attempting forest tracks in wet weather.
Best Time to Visit Wesergebirge #
Best from late spring to early autumn for walking and small-town exploration; winters are quiet and atmospheric.
