Werakata National Park is a protected area in the Hunter region of New South Wales that conserves remnants of native eucalypt forest and woodland. The park protects biodiversity values and provides local opportunities for walking, picnicking and nature observation.

How to Get to Werakata National Park #
Werakata sits roughly between the towns of Cessnock and Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Region. From Cessnock, follow Wollombi Road north then take local roads (signposted to various park entrances such as Black Creek and Aberdare); drive time from Newcastle is about 45-60 minutes. There is no dedicated public transport into the park - visitors normally arrive by car. Tips for Visiting Werakata National Park #
- Enter from Cessnock or Kurri Kurri; the Black Creek picnic area is less busy than the main carpark.
- Look for the old mine relics near the Aberdare section - the graffiti-stained concrete culverts tell a coal-town story most visitors miss.
- Spring (September-November) produces spectacular wildflower displays; bring a camera with a macro lens for the native orchids.
