Weissmies
Mountain Swiss Alpine peak popular with mountaineers
In the Valais Alps, Weissmies draws climbers with glacier routes and classic alpine ridges. Parties approach from nearby valley villages for summer ascents and ski touring in winter.
Weissmies is a 4,017 metre peak in the Valais section of the Pennine Alps in Switzerland and is one of the Alpine “four-thousanders.” It is a recognized objective for mountaineers seeking a classic 4,000 m ascent in the Swiss Alps.
The mountain is commonly climbed from the Saas side and from the Zwischbergen/Simplon side by routes that cross glaciers and low-angled snow slopes. As a 4,000-metre summit it offers panoramic views of neighbouring Pennine peaks and is often included in multi-day itineraries in the Saas Valley and surrounding high alpine area.
Weissmies has been part of the alpine climbing tradition since the 19th century and its routes and huts were developed as mountaineering in the Alps grew. Access infrastructure such as local cable cars and valley huts make it a frequent objective for guided parties and experienced independent climbers.
The mountain sits in the canton of Valais above the valley of Saas and the upper Rhône basin in southern Switzerland, within easy approach from alpine villages in the Saas Valley and not far from the Simplon region.
- Routes and difficulty: Normal routes involve glacier travel and simple rock ridges; crampons and basic alpine experience are required outside summer conditions.
- Best time to climb: Best conditions for clear views and safer glacier travel are typically July to September.
How to Get to Weissmies #
Most approaches start from Saas-Grund or Saas-Almagell in the Saas Valley. Saas-Grund is accessible by road from Visp and Visp is served by Swiss Federal Railways; local PostBus services and mountain cable cars (e.g., to Hohsaas) shorten the approach for climbers.
Tips for Visiting Weissmies #
- The common approach is from the Saas Valley; use the Hohsaas cable car to shorten the climb and start higher on glacier routes.
- Summit attempts should be planned with a certified mountain guide - crevasse hazards and route-finding are non-trivial on the glacier.
- Check the operating status of mountain lifts (Hohsaas/Weissmies lifts) before planning - they affect timing and route choices.
Best Time to Visit Weissmies #
Most ascents are done in summer; alpine conditions can change rapidly at any time of year.
