Wawel
Building Historic royal castle complex in Kraków
Perched above the Vistula in Kraków, Wawel Hill contains the royal castle and cathedral; visitors tour state rooms, medieval chapels and cathedral crypts and walk the riverfront.
Wawel is a historic hill-top complex in Kraków that combines the Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral, and served as the political and cultural heart of Poland for several centuries. It is one of Poland’s most important national monuments and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Kraków’s historic centre.
The cathedral with royal tombs and coronation chapels, the castle’s state rooms and Renaissance courtyards, and the popular Dragon’s Den under the hill. Many of the castle’s interiors are arranged as museum displays with period furnishings, paintings and armoury collections.
The site developed over many centuries, with Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance phases as Polish rulers rebuilt and expanded the complex; major Renaissance rebuilding took place in the 16th century when Italian architects worked on the royal residence. It remained the principal royal seat until the late 1500s, after which the political center moved to Warsaw.
Wawel occupies a prominent position on Wawel Hill overlooking the Vistula River within Kraków’s Old Town, immediately adjacent to the Rynek and central medieval streets.
- UNESCO: Part of the Historic Centre of Kraków, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978.
- Royal seat: The castle complex served as the seat of Polish kings from roughly the 11th century until the late 16th century.
What to See #
- Wawel Cathedral: A cathedral complex with royal tombs and coronation sites spanning medieval to early modern construction phases; it is the principal church of the complex and a major pilgrimage site.

- Dragon's Den: The Dragon's Den, a limestone cave beneath the hill associated with local legend and a waterside dragon statue that is a popular spot for visitors.
