Wave Rock
Cliff Granite rock formation shaped like a giant breaking wave
Wave Rock near Hyden, Western Australia is a curved granite formation visited for its photographic arc, short walks and nearby Aboriginal rock art and wildflower drives.
Wave Rock is a natural granite rock formation in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia near the town of Hyden, notable for its arched, wave-like shape. The rock face stands about 15 metres high and extends roughly 110 metres in length.
Visitors approach via a short walk from the visitor parking area to a viewing platform at the base of the formation; nearby facilities include picnic areas and a small visitor centre in Hyden. The formation is part of a larger granite inselberg system and is a frequent stop on regional sightseeing routes.
Wave Rock formed by differential weathering and sheet jointing of a granite outcrop rather than by human action; the exposed, sculpted face shows banding and mineral staining created over long periods of weathering. The site is immediately adjacent to the town of Hyden and set in the surrounding agricultural Wheatbelt landscape.
- Viewing tip: A short paved path and lookout platform allow close-up views of the concave face; best light for photography is low-angle morning or late afternoon sun.
