Watzmann
Mountain Prominent Bavarian Alpine massif popular with climbers
Watzmann, a Bavarian massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps, presents steep faces, alpine trails and proximity to Königssee; mountaineers, hikers and photographers come for classic Alpine routes and scenery.
Watzmann is a prominent mountain massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps of Bavaria, Germany, notable for its jagged profile and large vertical faces. The highest summit, Watzmann-Mittelspitze, reaches approximately 2,713 metres above sea level.
The massif offers alpine hiking, mountaineering and climbing routes of varying difficulty, with marked trails on the lower flanks and technical routes on the higher faces. The dramatic east face is a well-known landmark visible from the lake and valley below.
Local use has included alpine pasturing and, since the 19th century, recreational climbing and mountain tourism. Mountaineering routes and mountain huts were developed as interest in alpine sports grew.
The Watzmann massif sits within the Berchtesgaden area of southeastern Bavaria, close to the Königssee and the town of Berchtesgaden, and is part of the landscape protected by Berchtesgaden National Park.
- Alpine routes and safety: High alpine routes and via ferrata are established on the massif; conditions can be steep and exposed and require proper mountain equipment and experience.
What to See #
- Watzmann-Mittelspitze: The main summit of the massif, Watzmann-Mittelspitze, rises to about 2,713 metres and is the highest point of the group.

How to Get to Watzmann #
The Watzmann massif is accessed from the Berchtesgaden area in Bavaria. The usual driving approach is from Salzburg (Austria) or the town of Berchtesgaden via the A8 (from Salzburg) and local roads (B305) toward Ramsau and the Königssee area - Salzburg is roughly 30-40 km away (about a 30-45 minute drive). Park at trailhead car parks in Ramsau or near the Königssee/Schönau am Königssee and proceed on foot from the parking areas to the mountain trails (walking time from most car parks to trailheads ranges from a few minutes up to around 30-45 minutes depending on which route you take).
Tips for Visiting Watzmann #
- Start alpine routes before dawn in good weather - popular hut approaches (e.g., to the Watzmannhaus) fill quickly and early starts avoid afternoon thunderstorms and the busiest periods on exposed ridges.
- Approach the massif from the Ramsau/Wimbach valley side to reach the main trailheads; parking and trailheads at Wimbachbrücke are the common starting points for the southern approaches.
- If you're not doing a summit traverse, opt for less-frequented routes through the Wimbach valley or choose a hut-based overnight to spread hikers across different itineraries and avoid the peak-day crowds on the normal ascent paths.
Best Time to Visit Watzmann #
Visit in summer (June-September) for the most accessible and safest hiking conditions; higher altitudes remain much colder.
