Watarrka National Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia that contains the prominent Kings Canyon feature. The park protects rugged sandstone ranges, deep gorges and pockets of native vegetation.

The park’s best-known attraction is Kings Canyon, where the 6-kilometre Rim Walk follows the canyon edge and offers lookout points over sandstone cliffs and sheltered gullies. Easier walks such as the Kings Creek Walk and the short Kathleen Springs Walk provide access to waterholes and Aboriginal heritage sites.

The park lies on the traditional lands of Aboriginal peoples of the region and contains sites of cultural significance. It was set aside for conservation and recreational use to protect the canyon landscape and native habitats.

Located in central Australia’s Northern Territory, Watarrka sits within a remote arid landscape characterised by sandstone ranges and sparse vegetation, with park access from nearby roads serving desert tourism routes.

  • Rim Walk length: The Kings Canyon Rim Walk is approximately 6 kilometres and typically takes 3 to 4 hours to complete; start early in high temperatures.
  • Canyon height: Canyon sandstone walls rise to around 100 metres in places, creating steep cliffs and shaded creek lines within the park.

  • Kathleen Springs Walk: Kathleen Springs, a short and mostly flat walk leading to a spring and homestead site important to local traditional owners and wildlife spotting.
