Warsaw radio mast
Tower Former world's tallest radio mast, collapsed in 1991
Near Gąbin, the Warsaw Radio Mast stood as the world’s tallest structure from 1974 until its collapse in 1991. The former site attracts historians and engineers interested in Cold War‑era broadcasting and antenna design.
The Warsaw radio mast was a very tall radio broadcasting mast located near the village of Konstantynów in the Masovian region of Poland, completed in the 1970s. It was used for longwave radio transmission and was notable for being the tallest man-made structure in the world while it stood.
The mast served national longwave broadcasting and was a key element of Poland’s broadcast infrastructure until it collapsed on 8 August 1991 during maintenance work. Its failure removed the structure and ended its broadcasting role.
Erected in the mid-1970s, the mast’s construction and operation reflected Cold War-era broadcasting priorities and large-scale engineering for longwave transmission. Following the collapse the site was cleared and broadcasting operations were relocated to other facilities.
The mast stood in a rural area north-east of Warsaw in the Masovian Voivodeship; the collapse remains a well-documented event in engineering and broadcasting history.
- Height and collapse: At 646.38 metres tall it was the world's tallest man-made structure while standing; the mast collapsed during renovation works on 8 August 1991 and no longer exists.
Tips for Visiting Warsaw radio mast #
- Be aware the Warsaw radio mast no longer exists: it collapsed in 1991, so there is no standing tower to visit and little to see at the original site beyond rural landscape.
- If you're researching the mast or planning a pilgrimage, check local historical sources or museums in the region beforehand-any remaining markers or displays are likely in nearby towns rather than at the mast site itself.
