Wall Museum
Museum Museum documenting Berlin Wall history and Cold War
At Checkpoint Charlie, the Mauermuseum (Wall Museum) documents the Berlin Wall and Cold War history with original escape artifacts, photographs and crossing paraphernalia. Tourists visit for first-hand exhibits and the site’s location between former East and West Berlin.
The Wall Museum, commonly known as the Mauermuseum - Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, is a Cold War museum located at the historic Checkpoint Charlie crossing in central Berlin. It focuses on the Berlin Wall, escape attempts from East to West and Cold War related exhibits.
Displays include original artifacts, photographs, documents and reconstructed escape devices and vehicles used in attempts to cross the Wall. The museum presents personal stories and documentary evidence illustrating life in divided Berlin.
Founded in 1962 by the historian and activist Rainer Hildebrandt, the museum grew from a private initiative into one of the main public sites interpreting the Berlin Wall. Its exhibitions have been updated over time to reflect newly available archives and research.
The museum stands immediately adjacent to the former Checkpoint Charlie site on Friedrichstraße in Berlin, within the central Mitte district and close to other Cold War and city-center landmarks.

How to Get to Wall Museum #
From Berlin Hauptbahnhof take the U6 line (to Kochstraße/Checkpoint Charlie) or the U2 to Potsdamer Platz and walk about 8-12 minutes south-east along Friedrichstraße. Many buses (TXL, M41) stop nearby; walking from Potsdamer Platz is an uncomplicated 15-20 minute route past preserved Cold War markers.
Tips for Visiting Wall Museum #
- Enter via the Friedrichstraße side to avoid the longest queues and get the first look at the original guard house replica.
- Bring a photocopy or screenshot of the museum map-some of the small Cold War exhibits are in separate rooms and easy to miss.
- Pause at the upstairs window that looks onto Checkpoint Charlie-locals still point out the exact spot of 1961 standoffs.
Best Time to Visit Wall Museum #
Best visited in spring or autumn to avoid main summer crowds and to have time to read the dense displays without being moved along by a throng.
