Walhalla is a neoclassical hall of fame and memorial on a limestone ridge above the Danube near Donaustauf in Bavaria, Germany. It was commissioned as a monument to distinguished German-speaking people and completed in the 19th century.
The interior contains commemorative busts and plaques honoring important German and German-speaking figures. The long exterior terrace and colonnade offer open views down the Danube valley and toward Regensburg; access requires a short climb or a short drive from the nearby town.
The memorial was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and designed by architect Leo von Klenze. Construction took place in the early to mid 19th century and the building was inaugurated in 1842.
The site sits above the town of Donaustauf on a limestone ridge overlooking the Danube, within the administrative region of Bavaria and close to the city of Regensburg.
