Mountains Range of forested hills and coastal cliffs near Auckland

The Waitākere Ranges are a forested range and regional park west of Auckland, New Zealand, known for coastal black-sand beaches, native kauri-dominated forest and an extensive network of walking tracks. The ranges extend from the hills above suburban West Auckland to the Tasman Sea and form a major natural and recreational area for the region.
West-coast surf beaches such as Piha and Karekare, steep forested ridges with native podocarp and kauri stands, waterfalls accessible by short walks, and panoramic viewpoints reached from short or long tracks. The Arataki Visitor Centre serves as the main information hub and provides views over the ranges and coastline.
The ranges are significant for both conservation and recreation; they contain important native forest remnants and are managed to balance public access with protections for native species. Several long-distance routes cross the area, including the multi-day Hillary Trail, and many shorter day-walks provide access to beaches, waterfalls and viewpoints.
The Waitākere Ranges lie roughly 20-30 km west of central Auckland and run to the Tasman Sea on New Zealand’s North Island, framing Auckland’s western shoreline with forested hills and west-coast beaches.
