Cape Geothermal park near Rotorua with colorful hot springs
Geothermal park near Rotorua famed for the Champagne Pool, silica terraces, steaming fumaroles and boardwalk trails. Tourists come for guided walks, geothermal features and nearby Maori cultural experiences in the Bay of Plenty.
Wai-O-Tapu is a geothermal area and public thermal park in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand, south-west of Rotorua. It is noted for its colorful hot springs, silica terraces and regularly demonstrated geyser eruptions.
The site includes several prominent features on boardwalks and viewing platforms that concentrate visitor access. Key attractions include the Champagne Pool, colorful silica terraces known as the Artist’s Palette, and the publicly demonstrated Lady Knox Geyser which erupts each morning around 10:15. Boardwalk circuits allow viewing of steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools and vividly stained pools within a short walking network.
The geothermal features are a result of volcanic activity in the Taupo Volcanic Zone and have existed for many thousands of years. The site’s Maori name means “sacred waters” and the area has long been significant; it was later developed for public access and scientific interest in the 20th century.
Wai-O-Tapu sits inland on the North Island within the Rotorua-Taupo geothermal belt, in the Bay of Plenty Region of New Zealand. It is accessible by road from Rotorua and nearby tourist routes linking the central North Island thermal attractions.
- Best time to visit: Demonstrated eruptions of Lady Knox Geyser are scheduled in the mornings and draw the largest crowds; arrive before 10:15 to view them from the main viewing area.
- Notable feature: The Champagne Pool is one of the park's signature features, approximately 65 metres across with hot mineral-rich water that is unsafe to enter.
What to See #
- Champagne Pool: A hot spring pool about 65 metres in diameter with a surface temperature around 73-75°C; rim deposits produce orange and white mineral terraces.
- Lady Knox Geyser: A geyser on a fixed schedule that is induced to erupt each morning; typical demonstrations occur at about 10:15 and can reach heights of up to around 20 metres.
- Artist's Palette: A series of silica terraces and mud pools with vivid orange, yellow and green colours caused by mineral staining and microbial mats.
- Devil's Bath: A deep, intensely green pool formed by mineral-rich geothermal water set close to the main boardwalk routes.
