Wahnfried

Wahnfried is the villa in Bayreuth, Bavaria that Richard Wagner commissioned as his family home in the 1870s; it later became the Richard Wagner Museum. The house is one of the principal historic sites associated with Wagner’s life.

Rooms preserved or reconstructed in the villa include Wagner’s study and family living areas, and the museum displays letters, photographs and other personal items connected to the composer. Many visitors plan visits around performances at the nearby Bayreuth Festspielhaus.

Wahnfried was commissioned by Richard Wagner and built in Bayreuth in the early 1870s; Wagner lived there until his death in 1883. Over the 20th century the house passed into museum use and now runs exhibitions about Wagner and his circle.

The villa stands on Wahnfriedstrasse in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, within easy walking distance of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus and the town centre.
