Valley Scenic Danube valley known for vineyards and medieval towns
The Wachau valley along the Danube between Melk and Krems is known for terraced vineyards, apricot orchards, medieval towns and river cruises or cycling routes through castle ruins and wine villages.
Wachau is the cultural landscape of the Danube valley in Lower Austria between the towns of Melk and Krems, known for its terraced vineyards, historic towns and concentration of medieval monuments.
The valley combines viticulture, riverine transport routes and a series of fortified towns and monastery sites that form a continuous cultural landscape along the river. Popular activities include short river cruises, cycling on the Danube cycle path and visits to the principal towns and ruins.
Human settlement and vineyard cultivation in the Wachau extend back many centuries, with medieval castles and monastic foundations forming important focal points within the valley.
The region follows the Danube through a steep, cultivated corridor west of Vienna and is readily reached by rail or road from Vienna and Lower Austria’s regional centres.

Tips for Visiting Wachau #
- Start in the smaller villages (e.g., Spitz or Weissenkirchen) early in the morning to enjoy the Wachau's wines and riverside views before the day‑trip boats and bus tours arrive in force.
- Use the Danube boat services between towns or the well‑marked bike path rather than relying on car travel for the most relaxed way to see multiple sites and avoid limited parking in the village centres.
- Explore uphill vineyard paths and small local wine taverns (Heurigen) off the main riverside road-these quieter spots are where many visitors discover better panoramic views and family‑run cellar experiences that larger tour groups miss.
Best Time to Visit Wachau #
Best in spring for blossoms or late summer-autumn for the grape harvest and scenery; both seasons offer active outdoors and wine events.
