Vršič Pass
Mountain Alpine mountain pass in Slovenia with panoramic views
A mountain pass through the Julian Alps with steep hairpins linking alpine valleys; travellers use it for hiking, cycling and as an access point to Triglav-area trails.
Vršič Pass is a high mountain pass in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia, reaching 1,611 metres above sea level. It is the highest road pass in Slovenia and a principal crossing between the Soča Valley and the Upper Sava Valley.
The route offers alpine viewpoints, hiking trailheads, and access to nearby peaks and valleys; roadside viewpoints at the pass provide panoramic views of surrounding limestone peaks and the Triglav range. The pass is also the trailhead for several marked mountain hikes and climbing routes.
The road over Vršič was improved in the early 20th century and saw further work during World War I, when Russian prisoners of war constructed parts of the route. The small Russian Chapel at the pass was built in 1916 as a memorial to those workers.
The pass lies within the Julian Alps between the towns of Kranjska Gora to the north and Bovec to the west, in a high-mountain landscape of rocky ridges, alpine meadows, and forested slopes.
- Elevation: The pass reaches an elevation of 1,611 metres, making it the highest road pass in the Julian Alps and in Slovenia.
What to See #
- Russian Chapel: A small Orthodox chapel known as the Russian Chapel stands near the summit; it was erected as a memorial by Russian prisoners of war in 1916.
