Vrancea Mountains

The Vrancea Mountains are a mountain area in eastern Romania, forming part of the Curvature Carpathians and known for concentrated seismic activity in the Vrancea zone. The range is notable less for high alpine relief than for its geology and earthquake-prone substrate.

The area contains forested slopes, ridges and valley systems used for forestry, grazing and local recreation rather than mass alpine tourism. Hikers and nature visitors find mixed montane forests and mountain meadows rather than high, glaciated peaks.

Geologically the mountains are part of the Carpathian orogenic system and the Vrancea region hosts an active intermediate-depth seismic source that has produced several large earthquakes. Human settlement and land use around the range have historically focused on agriculture, forestry and small mountain communities.

Geographically the mountains lie in eastern Romania, concentrated in and around Vrancea County and adjacent administrative areas, forming a transition zone between the higher Carpathian arc and lower eastern plains.

• Seismic zone: Earthquakes in the Vrancea area are typically intermediate-depth, occurring roughly 70-180 kilometers beneath the surface.
• Notable events: The region produced major damaging earthquakes in the 20th century, notably in 1940 and 1977, which affected large parts of Romania.
