Voroneț Monastery

Voroneț Monastery is a late 15th-century Orthodox foundation in Suceava County, Romania, renowned for its richly painted exterior frescoes. Built by Stephen the Great in 1488, the site is one of the celebrated painted monasteries of northern Moldavia and attracts visitors for its wall paintings and medieval architecture.

The principal attraction is the main church with extensive exterior cycles that include a monumental Last Judgment scene and numerous saintly figures executed in a striking deep blue pigment. The monastery complex also includes a bell tower and monastic buildings clustered around the church.

The foundation dates firmly to 1488 under the rule of Stephen III of Moldavia; the exterior fresco program that survives today is the result of later painting campaigns that established the vivid color scheme for which the site is famous.

Voroneț stands in the village of Voroneț near Gura Humorului in northeastern Romania, set amid the rolling hills of the historical region of Moldavia and reachable from the county town of Suceava.
