Sydney’s Vivid festival began in 2009 and has grown from a single light event into a multi-disciplinary celebration combining large-scale projection art, interactive lighting, contemporary music and a programme of talks and ideas.

Sydney stages Vivid across May and into June each year; exact dates are set annually by the festival organisers rather than by a fixed calendar rule. The programme typically opens with a launch weekend and runs nightly through the festival period, with the busiest evenings falling on weekends and the first week after opening.

Light installations generally come to life from dusk and continue into the late evening, while ticketed music and talks are scheduled at specific times across the festival run.

The main international gateway is Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD); from the airport the Airport Link train reaches the city in about 15 minutes to Central Station, from where trains, light rail, buses, ferries or a short taxi will get you to Circular Quay and nearby precincts where much of Vivid is concentrated. Arrive at least a day early to settle in and book accommodation and any ticketed events well ahead, especially for weekend nights.
