Vitosha nature park

Vitosha Nature Park is a protected area on the Vitosha massif in western Bulgaria, established in 1934 to conserve the mountain’s ecosystems. It protects montane forests, alpine meadows and distinctive rock formations and serves as a major recreational area for the Sofia region.

Hikers and day-trippers use a dense network of trails and mountain paths that lead to the summit and ridges; the highest point reaches 2,290 m. The park also has developed facilities for winter sports on the northern slopes and multiple marked hiking routes of varying difficulty.

Cultural and geological highlights include medieval ecclesiastical monuments on the lower slopes and extensive granite block fields known locally as stone rivers, including the Zlatnite Mostove formation. The area is used for scientific research, outdoor recreation and seasonal skiing.

The park sits directly south of Sofia, with its northern foothills beginning about 10 km from the city center; the massif dominates the skyline above the capital and is surrounded by suburban and forested terrain.

• Cherni Vrah: Highest point at 2,290 m, reached by multiple marked trails from northern and southern trailheads.
• Aleko area: Alpine hut and ski area on the northern slopes that serves as a primary trailhead with parking and seasonal lift access.
• Boyana Church: Medieval Orthodox church on the eastern foothills dating mainly to the 10th and 11th centuries and included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
