Vitcos
Archaeological Site Remote Inca ceremonial site in Vilcabamba mountains
Vitcos in the Cusco region preserves Inca ruins and stone terraces in the Upper Vilcabamba area; trekkers and history enthusiasts visit for remote ruins linked to the Inca resistance and mountain trails.
Vitcos is an Inca archaeological site in the Cusco Department of Peru, located in the Vilcabamba area of the Andes. It contains settlement and ceremonial remains associated with the late Inca period.
The site comprises terraces, house foundations and plazas set into mountain-forest terrain; a notable nearby feature is the ceremonial rock known as Ñusta Hispana or Rosaspata. Visitors typically approach the ruins on trekking routes that link other Vilcabamba-era sites.
The layout and stonework at Vitcos reflect domestic and ritual functions rather than the large imperial complexes found nearer Cusco. Interpretation focuses on the site’s role during the final centuries of Inca rule.
Vitcos was occupied and used during the 16th century as part of the Neo-Inca State in the Vilcabamba region after the Spanish conquest of the highlands. It formed one component of the last independent Inca political and ceremonial landscape before Spanish capture of the region.
The site lies in the mountainous forested interior of the Cusco region, set above lowland valleys and accessed by foot trails from nearby rural communities within the department.
- Neo-Inca association: Associated with the Neo-Inca State in the 16th century and linked to the final Inca refuges in the Vilcabamba region, making it important for understanding the last phase of Inca political history.
