Viminacium
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman provincial city and archaeological park
Ancient Roman city and legionary base near modern Požarevac; visitors explore excavated streets, mosaics, an amphitheatre and a necropolis that illuminate Roman Balkan provincial life.
Viminacium is a major Roman-period city and legionary camp located near the modern town of Požarevac in Serbia; it was an important urban and military centre in the Roman province along the Danube. The archaeological site preserves large-scale remains of the city, necropoleis and public buildings dating chiefly to the 1st through 6th centuries AD.
The site offers exposed street plans, building foundations and a restored archaeological park with visible public structures. Excavated features include an amphitheatre, burial complexes with grave goods and mosaics, and concentrations of finds that are displayed in the on-site museum.
Founded and developed during the Roman imperial period, Viminacium served both as a civilian town and as a military base for Roman forces on the Danubian frontier. It was occupied and transformed over several centuries before decline in the early medieval period; archaeological work has been carried out from the 20th century to the present.
The ruins lie in eastern Serbia, inland from the Danube, close to modern Požarevac and the village of Kostolac. The landscape is low-lying river plain near the Danube corridor where the Roman frontier ran.
- Notable discoveries: Excavations have revealed mosaics, an amphitheatre and extensive burial grounds; many finds are displayed locally in the site museum.
- Site scope: The site covers both a civilian urban settlement and an adjoining military camp, so visitors see both domestic and military Roman remains.
What to See #
