Island Small Baltic island nature reserve near Rügen

Main image

Vilm is a small, forested island in the Baltic Sea off the southeastern coast of the island of Rfcgen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is designated and managed for nature conservation and scientific study.

The island’s main attraction is its intact native woodland and coastal habitat; guided walks visit shoreline viewpoints and short trails rather than developed tourist facilities. Boat landings are limited and visits are typically short, giving priority to nature observation and protected-area rules.

Vilm has been used for conservation and environmental research in the 20th and 21st centuries and is managed to limit human impact; ownership and management are organized under state conservation authorities. Facilities on the island are minimal and focused on research and protected-area management rather than tourism.

Geographically it sits a short boat ride off the villages of Lauterbach and Putbus on Rfcgen in the Baltic Sea, within sight of the Rfcgen coastline. The landscape around it is shallow Baltic waters, small skerries and the coastal plain of southeastern Rfcgen.

  • Access: Landing and visitor access are restricted because the island is a protected reserve; public visits are usually limited to guided tours that depart from the nearby Rfcgen harbour at Lauterbach.
  • Conservation status: The island lies close to the southeastern coast of Rfcgen and is notable locally for dense, mature woodland and undisturbed shoreline habitats.

What to See #

  • Gror Vilm: The main island of the pair, heavily forested and forming the bulk of the nature reserve; contains the island's shoreline, cliffs and walking routes used on guided visits.
  • Kleiner Vilm: A much smaller islet immediately off the main island, largely uninhabited and often noted in access and navigation descriptions.

How to Get to Vilm #

Boat transfers to Vilm depart from Lauterbach (on Rügen) and nearby mainland harbours; services run seasonally and are often organized by the national park authority or local tour operators.

  • Walking trails are well-marked; rent a bike in nearby Lauterbach or sellin to explore the surrounding national park.
