Villa San Michele
Museum Hilltop house-museum on Capri with panoramic views
Perched on Capri, Villa San Michele-the former house of Axel Munthe-offers terraced gardens, classical antiquities and sweeping views over the Bay of Naples; visitors tour the museum rooms and trails.
Villa San Michele is a villa and museum on the island of Capri in the town of Anacapri, created by Swedish physician Axel Munthe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is notable for its terraced gardens, classical fragments and panoramic views over the Bay of Naples.
The site contains formal terraces and a loggia that look across the sea toward Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrentine Peninsula, with multiple paved viewpoints and stairways. Garden areas are planted around archaeological fragments and classical sculptures; the house contains rooms displaying Munthe’s collections of antiquities, paintings and furniture. The property is compact but vertically arranged, so sightseeing typically takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on time spent in the museum rooms.
Axel Munthe purchased and developed the property during the late 1800s and early 1900s, adapting earlier ruins on the site and assembling a house, gardens and collections that reflected his interests in archaeology and medicine. After Munthe’s death the villa and its collections were preserved and opened to the public as a museum.
Perched on the slopes of Monte Solaro in Anacapri, the villa sits above the island’s main settlement and is accessed by local roads and footpaths from the town. Capri island lies off the Sorrentine Peninsula, roughly 20 kilometers south of the city of Naples by sea.
- Site access: Access involves steps and uneven paths; wear sturdy shoes and allow time for climbs between terraces and viewpoints.
- Best time to visit: Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the sun falls across the bay and Mount Vesuvius.

How to Get to Villa San Michele #
Villa San Michele is in Anacapri on the island of Capri. From Marina Grande (the main port) take the local SITA bus or the funicular/uphill bus service to Anacapri; once in Anacapri it’s an uphill walk of about 10-15 minutes from the town centre to the villa’s entrance.
If you drive to Anacapri, follow the local island roads to the town centre where limited public parking is available and then proceed on foot; buses between Capri and Anacapri run frequently, especially in high season.
Tips for Visiting Villa San Michele #
- Use the Anacapri chairlift to Monte Solaro or reach the villa from the town centre early in the day - morning light and cooler air make the villa's terraces and views of the Bay of Naples best enjoyed before midday crowds.
- Allow extra time for the gardens and the house museum: visitors often come for the views but miss the archaeological fragments and personal collections inside the villa.
- Combine Villa San Michele with a short walk down through Anacapri rather than trying to return by taxi at peak times; the village streets make a pleasant transition after the villa visit.
Best Time to Visit Villa San Michele #
Villa San Michele is best in spring or early autumn when the gardens are pleasant and visitor numbers are lower than in summer.
