Villa Lante

Villa Lante is a 16th-century villa and garden in Bagnaia near Viterbo in Lazio, Italy, celebrated for its Mannerist terraced gardens, symmetrical layout and sophisticated waterworks.

The site is organized as a sequence of terraces and formal parterres linked by a central axis of fountains, cascades and ornamental basins; visitors walk from the upper casini down through the cascades to the lower garden. The layout emphasizes symmetry and sculpted vegetation, with stone balustrades, statues and engineered water features that remain a focal point of the design.

Commissioned in the mid-16th century, the gardens and casini were developed by notable patrons of the period and reflect the ideals of Renaissance garden composition and hydraulic ingenuity. The ensemble has been conserved as an important example of Italian garden art.
