Villa Jovis
Ruins Roman imperial villa of Emperor Tiberius on Capri
High on Capri’s eastern ridge, Villa Jovis preserves the ruins of Emperor Tiberius’s Roman palace; hikers access archaeological remains and look out over coastal stretches toward the Bay of Naples.
Villa Jovis is the remains of a Roman imperial palace on the island of Capri traditionally associated with the emperor Tiberius. The complex dates to the early first century AD and occupies a prominent cliff-top position.
The site was constructed in the early Roman imperial period as a residential and administrative complex attributed to Emperor Tiberius, who used Capri as a place of residence in the early first century AD. Over time the structure fell into ruin and was later documented by antiquarians and archaeologists studying Roman imperial sites.
The remains sit on the northeastern promontory of the island of Capri, high above the surrounding sea and cliffs, and are reached from the town of Capri by footpaths that climb the island interior.
- Access and viewpoint: Sited on the northeastern part of the island of Capri, the ruins are reachable by a steep footpath from the town of Capri and offer sea and island views from the cliff-top position.
How to Get to Villa Jovis #
Villa Jovis sits on the eastern end of the island of Capri above Marina Grande. Reach Capri by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, Sorrento or Positano to Marina Grande; from the Marina follow the well‑marked uphill footpath to Villa Jovis - the walk is steep and typically takes around 30-45 minutes.
There is no regular public bus that stops at the ruin itself, so plan for a hike from Marina Grande or from Capri town (Piazzetta) via the island’s footpaths.
Tips for Visiting Villa Jovis #
- Aim for first thing in the morning (or late afternoon) to avoid island day-trippers and to enjoy cooler temperatures on the uphill trail up to the ruins.
- Approach on foot from Capri town via the marked trail rather than attempting narrow vehicle access-the path leads you past ruins and viewpoints and places you at the site's main entrance.
- Stay at the summit viewpoints after touring the remains: the panoramic views over the Gulf of Naples and Sorrentine coast are a major highlight that many visitors miss if they leave immediately.
