Villa Farnesina
Museum Renaissance Roman villa famed for frescoes by Raphael
Renaissance Villa Farnesina in Rome’s Trastevere displays fresco cycles by Raphael, Sebastiano and other Renaissance decorators; visitors come for the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche, frescoed halls and villa gardens.
Villa Farnesina is an early 16th-century Renaissance suburban villa in the Trastevere district of Rome, built for the banker Agostino Chigi and noted for its high-quality fresco decoration. It is important for works by Raphael and other prominent artists of the period.
Principal attractions are the frescoed reception rooms, including mythological and allegorical cycles executed by Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo and other workshop painters. The villa’s interior decoration is a key example of High Renaissance domestic art rather than monumental public architecture, and guided visits concentrate on the major painted rooms.
The villa was commissioned and constructed in the first decades of the 1500s as a luxurious suburban residence for Chigi and has been preserved as an architectural and artistic monument with its fresco cycles largely intact. Over time it served different institutional uses and today functions as a museum showcasing its paintings and decorative program.
The villa stands on Via della Lungara in Rome’s Trastevere quarter on the west bank of the Tiber, within walking distance of central Rome and proximate to other Renaissance-era sites and palaces.
