Villa Farnese
Museum Massive Renaissance palace notable for frescoed interiors
Sixteenth-century Mannerist villa in Caprarola with a pentagonal plan, frescoed state rooms and terraced gardens; visitors tour the courtyard, spiral stair and terraces for views over the Lazio countryside.
Villa Farnese (Villa Caprarola) is a mid-16th century Renaissance villa-palace in the town of Caprarola in Lazio, built for the Farnese papal family. The complex is notable for its fortress-like pentagonal exterior and a central circular courtyard that organises the interior sequence.
Interior highlights include richly frescoed state rooms and a monumental inner cortile; the exterior terraces and loggias step down the hillside and give panoramic views over the surrounding Viterbo countryside. The villa combines defensive massing with formal Renaissance spatial and decorative programs.
Construction took place in the mid-1500s as part of an ambitious Farnese building project; the design is associated with the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola and the villa was executed as a princely residence rather than a medieval fortress. Over time it served as a family palace and a demonstration of Farnese status and patronage.
The villa sits in the town of Caprarola in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, in inland central Italy. It occupies a raised site above the surrounding agricultural landscape and is approached from the town below.
- Plan form: The building's pentagonal, fortress-like outer plan conceals a circular inner courtyard - a distinctive Renaissance architectural solution.
What to See #
- Central cortile: A central circular courtyard set inside a pentagonal outer shell, designed to unite the palace's fortified exterior with an ordered Renaissance interior space.
- Terraced gardens: Terraced gardens and loggias that step away from the palace walls and provide framed views over the surrounding countryside of the Viterbo district.
- Farnese apartments: The sequence of decorated state rooms and apartments, which contain frescoed ceilings and walls characteristic of high Renaissance interior decoration.
How to Get to Villa Farnese #
Caprarola is about 70 km northwest of Rome and 20 km from Viterbo. By car follow the SS2 Cassia or local SP roads; regional buses connect Caprarola with Viterbo and Rome in limited service. The palace is central within the town and well signposted.
