Villa d’Este in Tivoli is a 16th-century Renaissance villa and garden complex near Rome, commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este and celebrated for its terraced layout and profusion of fountains. The property is an outstanding example of Renaissance garden design integrating architecture and hydraulic engineering.

The site features multiple terraces arranged on a hillside with fountains, nymphaea, grottoes and water-driven theatrical features. The design exploits gravity-fed waterworks and cisterns to animate hundreds of jets and cascades across the gardens.

Construction dates to the mid-16th century under the patronage of the d’Este family, with designers and builders creating an ensemble that influenced European garden design in subsequent centuries. The villa and gardens remain a reference point for Renaissance landscape architecture.

The villa sits in the town of Tivoli, about 25-30 kilometres east of central Rome, set on the lower slopes above the Aniene valley.
