How to Get to Villa de Leiva#

Villa de Leyva is most commonly reached overland from Bogotá (El Dorado Airport) by bus or private car. The bus from Bogotá’s main terminal is the straightforward, inexpensive option; renting a car is handy if you want to explore sites around the rural Boyacá countryside.

By Air

El Dorado International Airport (BOG): Fly into Bogotá’s El Dorado and transfer to the city’s Terminal de Transporte (Terminal Salitre). A taxi from the airport to the terminal is roughly COP 20,000-30,000 (15-30 minutes). From Terminal Salitre there are direct intercity buses to Villa de Leyva; journey time is about 3.5-4.5 hours and fares are typically COP 30,000-45,000.

Palonegro / Bucaramanga (BGA) or other regional airports: These are farther and less convenient than Bogotá for most international arrivals. If you arrive in Bucaramanga (Palonegro) or other regional airports you will need to connect by bus or road to Tunja and then a short bus/taxi on to Villa de Leyva; expect several hours of road travel.

By Train & Bus

Train: Colombia does not have an intercity passenger rail connection for this route; travel to Villa de Leyva is done by road.

  • Intercity bus (Bogotá ⇄ Villa de Leyva) (COP 30,000-45,000) - Direct buses depart Terminal de Transporte Salitre in Bogotá; companies run multiple departures a day. Journey time is about 3.5-4.5 hours depending on traffic. Buses drop you near the main plaza in Villa de Leyva; bring water and snacks for the ride and buy tickets at the terminal or via the operator’s desk.
  • Local bus / colectivo (Tunja ⇄ Villa de Leyva) (COP 3,000-10,000) - Tunja is the nearest larger town (about 45-60 minutes by road). Timetables are informal-arrive early during high season and be ready to wait for a full vehicle.
  • Taxi (COP 5,000-15,000) - Taxis and moto-taxis operate in Villa de Leyva for short hops (to Mirador, nearby archaeological sites). Fares are short but negotiate or ask the driver to use the meter where available. Taxis are useful for early-morning site visits when buses are infrequent.
  • Car rental (COP 120,000+/day) - Renting a car in Bogotá and driving to Villa de Leyva gives you complete flexibility to visit dispersed attractions in Boyacá (fossil sites, salt mines, small towns). Roads are paved but can be narrow in places; a small car is usually sufficient. Parking near the town centre can be busy on weekends.
  • Walking - Villa de Leyva’s compact historic centre is best explored on foot: the Plaza Mayor and surrounding cobbled streets are pedestrian-friendly. Many attractions are a short walk from the main square; comfortable shoes are recommended.
