Vilcabamba refers to the remote Andean valley and the late-Inca political center in the Cusco region that served as a refuge and stronghold of the Neo-Inca state in the 16th century. It is associated with the last independent Inca rulers after the Spanish conquest of the highlands.
The site includes ruined settlements and dispersed archaeological remains that mark the area where Inca resistance continued until the late 1500s. Historians link the valley to the retreat and eventual fall of the Neo-Inca state led from this remote area.
Vilcabamba lies in the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes within the Department of Cusco, in a rugged highland-and-cloud-forest transition zone; the nearest major city is Cusco, several hours’ travel to the east by road.
