Vikos–Aoös National Park
National Park Greek park featuring Vikos Gorge, limestone canyons
Epirus park protecting Vikos Gorge and the Aoös River canyon. Hikers follow trails to deep limestone gorges, stone villages like Monodendri, and raft or kayak sections of the Aoös.
Vikos-Aoös National Park protects a section of the Pindus mountains in northwestern Greece and is centred on two major river gorges and karstic mountain landscapes. The park is notable for steep limestone gorges, clear mountain rivers and traditional stone villages.
The most celebrated feature is the Vikos Gorge, a deep, narrow canyon carved by the Voidomatis River with sheer walls that in places reach up to about 1,000 metres. The Aoös Gorge on the park’s western side contains a narrow river canyon and dramatic bridges and cliffs.
Hiking, canyon viewpoints and river-based sightseeing are the main visitor activities; short to multi-day routes link mountain villages, springs and lookout points. Local stone settlements such as Monodendri and traditional footpaths provide access to the main viewpoints and gorge trails.
The park lies in the Epirus region within the Pindus mountain range and covers high-relief terrain of limestone and karst. It occupies rugged country northwest of central Greece and contains the headwaters of rivers that flow toward the Ionian Sea.
- Best viewpoints: Lookouts such as Beloi and Oxia near the village of Monodendri offer the most accessible panoramic views into Vikos Gorge.
- Trail conditions: Many trails in the park are steep and rocky; the main gorge routes are best visited from late spring to early autumn when mountain paths are drier.
What to See #
- Vikos Gorge: A river-cut gorge up to about 1,000 metres deep in places, carved by the Voidomatis River; the gorge is known for steep limestone walls and high-relief scenery.
- Aoös Gorge: A rugged canyon carved by the Aoös River with narrow walls and several accessible viewpoints; the gorge forms part of the park's western mountain system.
- Voidomatis springs and river: The karst-fed spring and short, clear river course that runs through the park; it supports high water quality and is a source for local hiking routes.
