Vignemale
Mountain Highest French Pyrenees peak on Franco-Spanish border
The Vignemale massif in the Pyrenees straddles the Franco‑Spanish border with glaciated peaks, alpine routes and refuge-based treks; mountaineers tackle Pique Longue and seasonal glacier travel.
Vignemale is a massif in the central Pyrenees straddling the border between France and Spain; its highest summit, Pique Longue, reaches 3,298 metres. It is one of the principal high-mountain features of the Pyrenees and a well-known objective for alpine climbers and mountaineers.
The massif offers glacier travel, rocky ridges and mixed snow-and-ice routes; the Glacier d’Ossoue on the northern face is the largest glacier on the mountain and forms the usual approach for summit attempts. Routes vary from long, non-technical glacier walks in summer to technical mixed climbs in winter and early season.
Vignemale has been part of the region’s mountaineering history since the 19th century and now hosts refuges and marked approaches used by climbers and hikers. It lies in the central Pyrenees on the border of Hautes-Pyrénées (France) and Aragon (Spain), close to towns such as Gavarnie and Cauterets.
- Elevation: Highest elevation on the massif is 3,298 metres at Pique Longue, making it the tallest peak entirely or partially in France within the Pyrenees.
- Glacier: The massif includes permanent glaciated terrain, most notably the Glacier d'Ossoue, which forms the standard alpine route for summit ascents.
