Vianden Castle
Castle Well-preserved medieval hilltop castle in Vianden
High above Vianden, the medieval castle (11th-century origins) presents Romanesque and Gothic rooms, a museum and wide views over the Our valley; visitors arrive for history, walks and vantage points over the town.
Vianden Castle is a large medieval fortified castle above the town of Vianden in north-eastern Luxembourg, with construction phases mainly from the 11th to the 14th centuries. It is one of the most prominent medieval monuments in the country and is set on a rocky escarpment above the Our River.
The complex includes an 11th-12th century keep, 13th-14th century palas (residential hall) and fortified curtain walls, with exhibition spaces and restored interior rooms open to visitors. The site is valued for its castle architecture and panoramic views of the town and valley.
The castle was built and expanded by local counts from the medieval period; it fell into disuse and partial ruin in later centuries and underwent major 20th-century restoration to rebuild collapsed sections and conserve surviving masonry. It now functions as a museum and heritage site with interpretive displays.
Vianden Castle sits above the town of Vianden in the Canton of Vianden, roughly 50 kilometres north of Luxembourg City by road. The castle occupies a prominent hilltop position overlooking the Our valley and is reached from the town below by footpaths and a road.
- Restoration: A major restoration campaign in the 20th century returned the ruinous castle to its present appearance; much of the conservation work was completed in the late 20th century.
- Viewpoints: Perched on a steep hill above the town of Vianden, the castle provides extensive views over the Our valley and the town streets below.
What to See #
- Upper castle (keep): A fortified keep and early masonry structures dating mainly to the 11th and 12th centuries, forming the oldest part of the complex and rising above the town.
- Lower palace (palas): Later residential and ceremonial buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries including the palas and great hall, which house exhibition spaces and restored interiors.
- Chapel and curtain walls: A small chapel and defensive curtain walls that articulate the castle's multi-phase medieval construction and offer viewpoints over the valley and town below.
