Verrès Castle

Verrès Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress in the Aosta Valley of northwestern Italy, built in the late 14th century and known for its compact, defensive design. The castle’s austere massing and fortified walls make it one of the more complete examples of late medieval military architecture in the region.

The site includes a tall keep, rectangular curtain walls and internal residential spaces adapted for noble use; the fortress was designed primarily for defence and lordly residence. Restorations over the 19th and 20th centuries have conserved structural elements and interiors for public access.

The castle stands on a rocky spur above the town of Verrès in the lower Aosta Valley, overlooking the valley corridor that leads toward the regional capital.
