Veli Brijun

Veli Brijun (Veliki Brijun) is the largest island in the Brijuni archipelago off the Istrian coast of Croatia and forms the core of Brijuni National Park. The island contains archaeological remains from Roman and earlier settlements, landscaped parkland and built heritage from later periods.

Key visitor attractions include the remains of ancient villas and structures, landscaped promenades and a preserved 20th-century villa complex that served as a state retreat. The island’s parkland also contains a small collection of introduced animal species in a managed setting and well-marked paths for exploration.

Archaeological evidence shows the island has been occupied since antiquity, with successive layers of activity through Roman, medieval and modern times; its modern role as a protected park dates from the 20th century when conservation and tourism uses were formalized. The island’s infrastructure is oriented toward guided sightseeing rather than independent large-scale tourism.

Veli Brijun lies off the Istrian coast near the town of Fažana and the city of Pula, and is accessed by scheduled boats and park-operated ferries from the mainland.
