How to Get to Velenje#
Velenje is best reached via Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) or by rail/bus from Slovenian regional hubs such as Celje or Maribor. The town has a small but functional railway and bus station with regular regional services.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU): Ljubljana Airport is the main gateway for Velenje. From LJU you can take the airport shuttle or local bus to Ljubljana central (about 30 min, €5-7), then a bus or regional train to Velenje (about 1h15-1h45, €6-12).
Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport (MBX): Maribor’s airport has limited scheduled services but is closer to Velenje. If you fly here, taxis to Velenje take around 45-60 minutes (typical fare ~€50-€70); regional buses run less frequently (travel time ~1h, lower fares).
Train: Velenje has a railway station (Velenje) with regional services linking to Celje and onward connections to Ljubljana and Maribor. Typical regional journeys: Velenje-Celje ~30-40 min, fares around €3-6; Velenje-Ljubljana (with a connection) commonly takes 1h15-1h45 depending on connections, fares ~€6-12.
Bus: Velenje’s main bus station (Avtobusna postaja Velenje) offers frequent buses to Celje, Maribor and Ljubljana. Bus trips to Ljubljana take roughly 1h-1h30 and cost in the region of €5-12 depending on operator; regional and local fares are lower for short hops.
How to Get Around Velenje#
Velenje is easiest to navigate by regional bus or train for intercity travel, while walking and cycling work best inside town. Hire a car only if you plan to explore the wider region or have limited public-transport connections.
- Regional train (Velenje station) (€3-12) - Regional trains connect Velenje with Celje and provide onward connections to Ljubljana and Maribor. Trains are practical for medium-distance travel (comfortable, reliable), but services are regional so timetables can be sparse outside peak hours. Buy tickets at stations or via the national operator SŽ.
- Regional buses (€2-12) - Buses from Avtobusna postaja Velenje link to nearby cities (Celje, Maribor, Ljubljana) and are often faster than indirect train routes. They are frequent during the day and a good option if you have luggage or are heading to towns not served by direct rail. Expect to buy tickets on board or at the station.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€10-€100) - Taxis and private transfers are widely available from the airport and town centre; they save time but are comparatively expensive for long trips (e.g., from LJU). Agree the fare in advance for airport trips or use a licensed company to avoid surprises. Useful for early/late arrivals when public transport is limited.
- Car rental (€30-70/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding countryside and smaller villages. Roads are well maintained and parking in Velenje is straightforward compared with larger Slovenian cities. Note that fuel and tolls add to the cost for longer day trips.
- Bicycle (€5-15/day) - Velenje and its environs are pleasant to cycle, with local paths and quiet roads. For short distances inside town it’s faster than waiting for a bus and good for sightseeing. Check local bike hire options in tourist season.
- Walking - Velenje is compact and very walkable: attractions, shops and parks are within easy walking distance of the centre. Walking is the best way to explore the town itself and short trips between neighbourhoods.

Nightlife is low-key - small bars and cafés around the main square and occasional concerts or cultural events at the castle or municipal venues. Expect early-evening drinks and local gatherings rather than a large-club scene.
