Velenje Castle is a medieval castle situated on a rocky hill overlooking the town of Velenje in northern Slovenia; its core dates to the medieval period with substantial later rebuilding. The site now houses museum exhibitions on regional history and art.
The fortress originated in the medieval period and was rebuilt and modified in subsequent centuries, notably during the late medieval and early modern eras. It has been adapted to house a municipal museum that interprets the castle’s history and the surrounding valley.
Standing above Velenje in the Šalek Valley of northeastern Slovenia, the castle is a short walk from the town centre and is visible from much of the local urban area.
- Panoramic viewpoints: Perched on a hill above the town, the site provides panoramic views over Velenje and the Šalek Valley from the castle terraces.
What to See #
- Museum of Velenje: Permanent exhibitions covering regional archaeology, local history and visual arts occupy restored rooms within the castle; displays interpret the castle's role and the surrounding area.
- Courtyard and chapel: The castle's inner courtyard, ramparts and small chapel are preserved as visitor-accessible spaces that illustrate the site's medieval layout and later modifications.
