Veerse Meer
Lake Man-made lagoon in Zeeland, part of Delta Works
An inland lagoon in Zeeland created by the Delta Works, the Veerse Meer offers sheltered waters for sailing, windsurfing and coastal birdwatching along its dikes and marinas.
Veerse Meer is an inland lagoon in the province of Zeeland in the southwest Netherlands, created when the Veerse Gat was closed as part of the Delta Works in the 20th century.
The lagoon is a regional watersports area with marinas, beaches and sheltered channels used for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and recreational fishing. There are several small islands and peninsulas with accessible beaches and boat moorings, and multiple harbours around the shoreline for day visitors and yachts.
The body of water was formed after the construction of the Veerse Gatdam, which closed the sea inlet and turned the tidal estuary into a more stable lagoon. Since its creation it has been managed for recreation, fisheries and water-level control as part of the wider Delta Works.
The Veerse Meer lies between the peninsulas of Noord-Beveland and Walcheren in Zeeland, near the town of Veere and within driving distance of regional centres in Zeeland.
- Watersports: Best wind and wave conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing typically occur in spring and late summer, when northerly and westerly breezes are strongest.
- Boating access: Several sheltered marinas and boat launching points make the lagoon easily navigable for day trips and multi-day cruises.
What to See #
- Veere (town): Sits on the lagoon's southern shore and contains the main historic harbour and marina used by visiting yachts and day-boaters.
- Veerse Gatdam: A Delta Works closure that separated the lagoon from the North Sea and controls water exchange between the lake and the estuary.
- Kortgene marina: A cluster of marinas and slipways on the lagoon's eastern shore serving recreational sailors and windsurfers.
