Vatu Vara
Island Dramatic conical island with steep cliffs, Fiji
A remote island in Fiji’s Lau Group, Vatu Vara is notable for steep sea cliffs and a flat summit; sailors and divers visit for remote snorkeling and marine life.
Vatu Vara is a steep-sided, flat-topped island in Fiji’s Lau group notable for its mesa-like summit. It is often referred to by the descriptive English name “Hat Island.”
The island is visually distinctive for its near-vertical coastal cliffs that rise to a relatively level summit; the profile is the main reason it is noted on charts and in aerial views. There are no regular tourist facilities and access is by private boat or charter only.
Vatu Vara is of volcanic origin like many islands in Fiji, forming a conspicuous sea stack and plateau through volcanic uplift and erosion. It has not been a site of permanent large-scale settlement in modern times.
Vatu Vara lies in the northern Lau Islands of eastern Fiji, positioned in the southwestern Pacific Ocean among the scattered atolls and high islands of the Lau archipelago.
- Nickname: the island is commonly called "Hat Island" because of its steep-sided, flat-topped profile
