The Varna Necropolis is a prehistoric burial site near the city of Varna on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, notable for its richly furnished Chalcolithic graves. Excavations uncovered some of the earliest known large quantities of worked gold.
The site yielded thousands of gold items, elaborate burial assemblages and is important for studying social complexity in prehistoric Europe. The finds are among the earliest examples of sophisticated metallurgy in the region.
Discovered during construction work in 1972 and subsequently excavated by archaeologists, the necropolis dates to the late 5th to early 4th millennium BCE and reshaped understanding of prehistoric Europe. Many artifacts are conserved and displayed in the Varna Archaeological Museum.
The necropolis lies just outside the modern city of Varna on the northeastern Bulgarian coast, within easy reach of the city and its museum facilities.
