Vaphio

Vaphio (often spelled Vapheio) is an archaeological site in the Peloponnese notable for a tholos burial that produced the famous Vapheio Cups, gold vessels dating to the Late Bronze Age. The find is significant for studies of Mycenaean and Aegean art.

The visible feature at the site is the burial monument itself and surrounding landscape; the most famous objects from the tomb, the two gold cups, have been conserved and are held in museum collections rather than on site. The cups illustrate high-quality metalwork and iconography connected to Minoan and Mycenaean workshops.

The tomb dates to the Late Bronze Age (circa 16th century BCE) and was used for elite burial with rich grave goods. Excavation of the tomb produced the gold cups and other objects that have been central to debates about cultural contacts in the Aegean.

The site sits in southern Greece’s Peloponnese region, within the historic landscape of Laconia not far from the area historically associated with Sparta.
