Valtellina

Valtellina is an alpine valley region in northern Lombardy, Italy, occupying a corridor through the Rhaetian Alps. The valley is known for its combination of terraced vineyards and mountain resorts.

The lower slopes and valley floor contain vineyards and small towns noted for regional wines, while the upper valley opens into high mountain terrain used for skiing, hiking and access to major alpine passes. The landscape includes steep terraced slopes, river corridors and alpine basins.

Historically the valley has been an important transit and agricultural region linking northern Italy with the Alps; over time it has developed both a wine economy on the lower slopes and mountain tourism at higher elevations.

Valtellina runs within the province of Sondrio in Lombardy, with major towns in the valley serving as bases for both wine tourism and alpine recreation in the surrounding mountains.
