Valle de la Luna (Chile)

Valle de la Luna is a dry, highly eroded sector of the Atacama Desert near San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, notable for salt crusts, wind-sculpted rock and dune formations that evoke a lunar landscape. The area lies within Los Flamencos National Reserve and is a major local visitor attraction.

Distinctive features include large dunes such as the Duna Mayor, salt-encrusted flats and a carved rock amphitheatre that together create stark, photogenic vistas across compacted salts and layered sediments. Trails and short routes lead to viewpoints within a compact area, making the site accessible on half-day visits from San Pedro de Atacama.

The landscapes are the product of long-term aridification, wind erosion and salt deposition in the high Atacama; human use is recent and primarily touristic and scientific rather than historical settlement. Protective measures within the national reserve manage visitor movement to prevent damage to fragile salt crusts and formations.

The valley lies in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile, roughly west of the town of San Pedro de Atacama, set within high, dry plateaus of the northern Atacama Desert.
