Vale of Tempe
Valley Narrow gorge between Olympus and Ossa with mythic significance
The Vale of Tempe is a narrow gorge between Mt. Olympus and Mt. Ossa, with the Pineios River, roadside viewpoints and walking routes that draw day visitors from Thessaly.
The Vale of Tempe is a narrow gorge in Thessaly, Greece, formed by the Pineios River between the mountain massifs of Olympus and Ossa. It has long been noted in literature and travel accounts for its dramatic flanked cliffs and wooded slopes.
A compact scenic corridor and natural pass, the vale offers riverside walks and short climbs along the gorge in its narrower stretches; it is often visited as a day trip from nearby towns. Modern road and rail routes run through the valley, which has made it an accessible natural landmark.
In antiquity the vale served as a strategic and ceremonial pass connecting Thessaly with Macedonia; it has been traversed and used since classical times and retains archaeological and literary associations.
The gorge lies in central northern Greece in the region of Thessaly, roughly between the cities of Larissa and Katerini, and is set in a mixed landscape of steep limestone slopes and riverine woodland.
- Viewpoints: The narrowest sections offer close views of the Pineios River flowing between steep limestone walls, and roadside viewpoints along the modern road and rail corridor provide easy short stops.
